Mona's Appraisal and Emotions

In season 2, episode 11, DeeDee introduces Mona to her new boyfriend at the time, Neil Crawford, and when Mona meets him, she acts awkward and leaves. DeeDee goes down to investigate, and Mona explains that Neil was her high school boyfriend and her first lover. 

Mona sees that DeeDee is interested in Neil, and so she agrees that DeeDee can date Neil as long as DeeDee is fine with it. Mona disregards her feelings that come up for Neil. DeeDee agrees to continue dating Neil, but as he comes around and talks with Mona, Mona begins to develop those feelings for Neil. 

Mona sits on these feelings until she goes up to DeeDee and takes back what she said about being okay with DeeDee dating Neil. Dee refuses to stop seeing Neil and continues to date him until the holidays come. She decides to break up with him because he is more focused on his work than the relationship. 

Naturally, Mona steps in as a big sister and puts her hurt feelings aside to comfort DeeDee, and acts as a voice of reason, helping her to accept her reality that Neil is not the one for her and that she needs to move on.  

Sister vs Sister 👊💥 

In season 2, episode 3, an aspiring politician, Ron Brown, enters the room; Mona meets him as a door-to-door campaign politician, and DeeDee meets him at a high-status event. They both begin to show interest in Ron. Additionally, once they find out they have been dating the same guy, both the sisters' moms want their daughter to date him. Phyllis wants Mona to date the politician as a "step up" from the guys she dated before and to show off as the winner compared to Big DeeDee and DeeDee. While Big DeeDee wants DeeDee to date Ron Brown because he is of a similar caliber to them (wealthy, influential, etc.) and to show off that DeeDee is getting married. 

This breaks out a rivalry between Mona and DeeDee, causing them to see each other as a threat in their aspiration to happiness and love, as each sister begins to like Ron, and he flirts back with them. They both agree to stop dating him, while secretly dating him behind each other's backs until they get caught. They decide to have Ron choose, and he chooses Mona. Mona feels great and feels like a winner after feeling like a loser compared to DeeDee for the majority of their lives. However, after winning, the flame between them fizzled for Mona because she just wanted to beat DeeDee in something; she eventually loses interest and breaks up with Ron. She then reconciles with DeeDee, and their bond becomes stronger because of it.
